TrekStudio Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 8, 2026
TrekStudio is an app to record and follow hiking tracks, developed by Manuel Baella Vidal (Peru). This policy explains which data the app uses and what happens to it. In short: everything you record stays on your phone. TrekStudio has no accounts, does not send your data to any server of its own, does not use advertising or analytics tools, and does not sell or share your data.
What data the app uses and where it is stored
All of this data is stored only on your phone, in the app's private storage:
- Location (GPS): to show you on the map and, while you record, to log your track (points with position, altitude, accuracy, speed and time). While recording it is also used with the app closed or the screen off, so the track is not cut and so you can be warned if you leave the track you are following. During a pause, the phone watches (without GPS) whether you move away from where you paused, to remind you to resume. When you are not recording, background location is not used.
- Barometer (motion sensor on iPhone): while recording, to measure elevation gain more precisely than the GPS.
- Recorded and imported tracks: the tracks you record and the GPX or KML files you import, with their names and statistics.
- Preferences: language, units, theme, map layer, recording mode and which tracks are shown on the map.
Notifications (for example, the warning that you are leaving the trail) are created by the phone itself: they do not go through any server.
Map services
To draw the map, the app downloads map images (“tiles”) from these providers. When it does, the provider receives the technical information of any internet connection, such as your IP address and the map area being viewed. Your GPS location and your tracks are not sent to them.
| Provider | Used for | Privacy policy |
|---|---|---|
| OpenFreeMap | Map and topographic map | openfreemap.org/privacy |
| Amazon Web Services | Terrain of the topographic map | aws.amazon.com/privacy |
| EOX IT Services | Satellite map | eox.at/privacy-notice |
Areas you have already viewed are stored on the phone so you can see them without signal and they are not downloaded again.
Permissions
- Location while using the app: show you on the map and record.
- Location always (background): keep recording with the app closed or the screen off. The app explains this before asking and only uses it while recording.
- Motion & fitness (iPhone): read the barometer for elevation.
- Notifications: warnings while recording (for example, if you are in a vehicle or leave the track).
You can remove any permission in your phone's Settings. Without location the app cannot record tracks, but it can still show the map and your saved tracks.
How long data is kept
Your tracks and preferences are kept until you delete them in the app or uninstall TrekStudio. Uninstalling it deletes all of them.
Sharing data
TrekStudio does not share your data with anyone. It only leaves your phone if you choose to share it (for example, when exporting a track in a future version).
Children
TrekStudio is not directed at children under 14 and does not collect data from anyone, including children.
Your rights
Since your data never leaves your phone, you are in full control of it: you can view, change or delete it in the app. If you have any question about your privacy, including the rights granted by Peru's Personal Data Protection Law No. 29733, write to us.
Changes to this policy
If TrekStudio starts using data differently (for example, with an optional cloud backup), this policy will be updated beforehand and the date of the last update will be shown.
